THE TIME BEING

The Time Being is an ongoing digital collaboration between lens-based artists in Canada

The Time Being is an artist collective initiated by Jessica Thalmann and Eva Kolcze. The Time Being is made up of lens-based media captured during the COVID-19 pandemic, with attention paid towards the sites, spaces, and environments visited and inhabited during their time in isolation.

Project History

The Time Being began as a virtual exhibition on Instagram in 2020. During the first 6 weeks of the project, the collaboration was extended to guest artists Jennifer Lee, Isabel M. Martínez, Miryam Charles, Meera Margaret Singh and Laura Grier who documented their pandemic experience and artistic practice.

In 2021, The Time Being was exhibited as a solo digital project and a 2-channel video installation at Angell Gallery. Further information about the exhibition can be found on Angell Gallery’s website.

2021-2022 Artist Collaboration

The current iteration of the project is a collaboration with the following eight artists: Leila Fatemi, Erika DeFreitas, Jeffery Chong, Vanessa Dion Fletcher, Esery Mondesir, Esmond Lee, Alyssa Bistonath and Renata Mohamed.
The project encompasses newly commissioned photographs and videos, a series of podcast interviews and a digital publication website (timebeing.ca).
The website includes all of the photographs, videos and writing created by each artist; along with all of the podcast episodes.
